The Joseph Stalin tank (or IS tank, named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin) is a heavy tank developed by the Soviet Union during World War II. Tanks in this series are also sometimes referred to as IS or IS tanks.
The heavy tank was designed with thick armor to withstand German 88mm guns and had a main gun capable of taking out German Tiger and Panther tanks.
It was mainly a breakthrough tank, firing a heavy high-explosive fragmentation projectile that was useful against trenches and bunkers.
The IS-2 entered service in April 1944 and was used by the Red Army as a vanguard in the Battle of Berlin at the final stage of the war.
