The BTR-152 was a six-wheeled Soviet armored personnel carrier built on the chassis and transmission of the ZiS-151 truck.
It entered service with a number of Warsaw Pact countries from 1950 and formed the basis of Soviet motorized rifle battalions until the introduction of a series of amphibious BTR-60s in the 1960s.
The BTR-152s were available in several grades and produced in large numbers for the Soviet military and for export.
Later models used automotive components from the more reliable ZIL-157 truck between 1950 and 1959.
Three main variants of the BTR-152 emerged: a basic armored personnel carrier with a single pinned 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, an unarmed command vehicle with a higher roofline, and an anti-aircraft variant armed with a ZPU-2 mount.
