M1 "Abrams" (English M1 Abrams) is the main battle tank of the third generation produced by the United States. The tank is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the US Army and commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. The M1 Abrams has been in service with the US Army since 1980, replacing the main battle tank M60 Patton, armed with a 105 mm gun. This tank, however, served for nearly a decade alongside an improved Patton modification, the M60A3, which entered service in 1978. The M1 remains the main battle tank of the United States (in service with the US Army and Marine Corps), as well as the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and since 2010, Iraq.
