In the early days of the Afghan War, the Soviets began developing the BMR series of mine clearing vehicles. The BMR-1 type (Su-122) entered service in 1982, the BMR-2 type (T-54) in 1985, and the BMR-3 type in 1995.
The BMR-3 was created on the basis of the T-72 tank and was equipped with a mine roller and a KMT-7 plow.
