The M48A3 Patton is an American third-generation main battle tank that became one of the key elements of the armored forces of the United States and its allies in the mid-20th century. This model is a modernized version of the M48 Patton, which improved the combat performance and protection of the tank. Design of the M48 series of medium tanks began in October 1950, and Chrysler Corporation was tasked with performing design work and providing six prototypes. Due to the Korean War, production of the M48 was authorized before any prototype or testing was completed. Ford and General Motors received production contracts, in addition to Chrysler, and the first M48 was delivered in early 1953.
