The M53 155mm self-propelled howitzer was intended to provide long-range fire support for Allied positions while keeping up with mechanized formations in rough terrain. It was adopted by the Army and Marine Corps in 1952 and was manufactured by the Pacific Car & Foundry Company. Since the M55 was the same vehicle designed from the 155mm howitzer, the M53s were standardized as the M55, but production ceased in 1956 and the USMC continued to use them in Vietnam until about 1969, but for many more years in NATO countries such as Belgium and Turkey.
