The Leopard is a West German designed and built main battle tank that first entered service in 1965. Developed in an era when HEAT warheads were thought to be used to make conventional heavy armor of limited value, the Leopard was focused on firepower in the form of German warheads. built a version of the British 105 mm L7 gun and improved cross-country ability, which was unparalleled in other designs of the time.
Development began as a joint project between Germany and France in the 1950s, but the partnership ended and the final design was commissioned by the Bundeswehr, with production starting in 1965.
