Development of the Jagdtiger (Hunting Tiger) began in February 1943, and on October 20, 1943, a wooden model was presented to Adolf Hitler. The Jagdtiger's role was to support infantry and combat armored vehicles at long range. Two prototypes, one with Porsche suspension (consisting of 8 road wheels) and one with Henschel suspension (consisting of 9 road wheels) were built in February 1944. Its first designation was Jagdpanzer VI, but it was later named Jagdtiger and given the number Sd.Kfz.186. Production was scheduled to start in December 1943, but began in July 1944.
