The AN/TPY-2 radars are high-resolution, X-band, phased-array radars designed and built specifically for missile defense missions. The radar can work in one of two modes: terminal or advanced. In terminal mode, the TPY-2 radar is integrated with the THAAD system and serves as its primary sensor. In this mode, the sensor is oriented upward to track the late stages of the missile's trajectory, enabling THAAD to intercept both out-of-atmosphere and re-entry vehicles. This mode has a shorter range due to the orientation of the radar.
