Development of the V-75 Dvina surface-to-air missile system, designated SA-2 "Guidance" by NATO, began in 1953 as a medium to high power SAM system for use against non-maneuvering targets such as bombers.
The system became operational in 1957 when the Air Defense formed SA-2 missile regiments from three to six railway launch battalions, with one of the initial deployments near the city of Sverdlovsk.
On May 1, 1960, Sverdlovsk units fired a total of 14 SA-2 missiles at a Lockheed U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft piloted by Gary Powers.
The SA-2 is a two-stage rocket with a large ejectable solid propellant tandem launcher stage fitted with four large undercut delta stabilizers.
