This anti-aircraft self-propelled gun was built by the German army during 1943 to provide protection for its units on the battlefield from increasingly strong enemy air attacks. The machine was developed on the basis of the hull of the Czechoslovak-made 38T tank, which was already widely used as the basis for a series of tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery installations. The "Gepard" was armed with a 2-centimeter gun. The FLAK 38, which, despite being an excellent weapon, did not provide the rate of fire required to defend an attacked area, forcing it to be used in groups for effective defense. Production totaled 140 before it was discontinued in early 1944.
