The Flak 43 was developed by Rheinmetall and had an entirely new breech gas mechanism and numerous velocity changes prior to production. It continued to use existing ammunition and the barrel remained largely the same as the Flak 18, 36 and 37. Changes in production speed meant that only 1,000 man-hours were required to manufacture instead of the previous 4,320 man-hours. Rate of fire, rate of turn and elevation were increased, making the Flak 43 a significant improvement over existing guns.
