BS-3 was created on the basis of the B-34 naval gun. The development team was headed by V.G. Grabin.
The gun was used by light artillery brigades of tank armies (20 pieces together with 48 ZiS-3) and corps artillery.
During the Great Patriotic War, the BS-3 was successfully used as a powerful anti-tank weapon. It was capable of defeating any modern tank at long range.
The gun was also used as a field gun. Although less powerful than the 122mm A-19 in this role, as it fired a smaller projectile, the BS-3 was more mobile and had a higher rate of fire.
