During World War II, the Gato class and its successor, the Balao class, carried much of the burden of submarine warfare in the Pacific.
These new fleet submarines were successful boats that proved to be fast, durable, well-armed and suitable for the long-range patrols required for warfare in the Pacific. They waged war against the Axis Powers, amassing a record of devastation and sheer lethal power unmatched by any other land or sea landing platform.
These new fleet submarines allowed the Navy to shift its submarine doctrine from coastal defense to high-ocean attacks on enemy warships and convoys critical to enemy logistical support.
