A series of submarines used by the German Navy during World War II (1939-1945). One of the modifications of type VII-C was air defense boats (designated as U-Flak). With the strengthening of Allied patrol aircraft in the Bay of Biscay, a need arose for air defense boats. 4 boats were converted: U-441, U-256, U-621 and U-951. The modernization of U-211, U-263 and U-271 was not completed. The modernization consisted in the installation of a new wheelhouse with two quadruple 20-mm and one 37-mm anti-aircraft guns. Boats of this type were supposed to operate only within the Bay of Biscay. All boats were returned to their original state by 1944.
