Type VII-A submarines were developed between 1933 and 1934, and from 1935 to 1937, 10 submarines of this type were built at the Kiel and Bremen shipyards.
These boats were the first in a series of boats of a fundamentally new type known as the Type VII. Significantly superior in performance to Type II boats, Type VII boats were to become the workhorse of the Kriegsmarine in World War II.
