Hermann Marwede was built by the German shipyard Fassmer Werft, and one of the subcontractors was the Polish company Aluship Gdańsk, which built the ship's hull. The Hermann Marwede was made for the German Maritime Rescue Society (German abbreviation: DGzRS) and is named after a long-time donor to that organization. The unit is characterized by very modern equipment and a high degree of automation, which made it possible to significantly reduce the crew.
