As ships and oil rigs grew in size in the 1970s, tugboats had to be developed to support them. Tugs SMIT ROTTERDAM and SMIT LONDON with a capacity of 22,000 hp, "family ships", were built in 1975 at the shipyard "De Merwede" in Hardinksveld-Gyssendam (Netherlands). For a long time, these two ocean tugs were the largest and most powerful in the world. They have been specially designed to tow very heavy items such as offshore platforms over long distances and in all weather conditions, as well as to support ships. It doesn't matter in which ocean. After a career of nearly 40 years, they were written off in India in 2013 and 2014.
