Designed in 1934 in accordance with the limitations of the Washington Naval Treaty, Ark Royal was built by Cammell Laird and Company, Ltd. Birkenhead, England, and completed in November 1938. Its design differed from previous aircraft carriers. The Ark Royal was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, rather than a superstructure or part of a superstructure. Designed to transport a large number of aircraft, it had two levels of hangar deck. She served in the period when naval aviation was widely used for the first time; a number of aircraft carrier tactics were developed and improved on board the Ark Royal.
