"Jean Bart" is a French fast battleship of the "Richelieu" type, the second and last of this type. It was the seventh ship of the French Navy named "Jean Bart" in honor of the French Admiral Jean Bart, its predecessor was a pre-dreadnought launched in 1911. Along with the sister ship Richelieu, the ships were designed as a response to the Italian Littorio, and were based on the design of their immediate Dunkirk-class predecessors, with the same unconventional armament arrangement, with the main battery located forward of the battleship in two quadruple gun turrets. These were enlarged to accommodate a much more powerful main battery of eight 380 mm (15 in) guns (compared to Dunkirk's 330 mm (13 in) guns), wi
