The Sangamon-class escort carrier was converted from a tanker in 1942. At that time, the hull of the C3 cargo ship was insufficient, and the development of combat operations was urgent to accompany the aircraft carrier. Since the oil tankers built under the Merchant Ship Construction Plan of 1936 were larger and faster, 4 of them were converted to the Sangamon class. After the completion of the Sangamon class, it participated in Allied amphibious operations in North Africa, setting the precedent for the use of an escort carrier as a fleet carrier.
