The Shenyang J-8II "Finback"-B has a redesigned forward fuselage that uses a pair of side intakes and a solid nose section replacing the original J-8 nose intake design. The robust nose section provides enough space to accommodate a larger fire control radar antenna for better detection and tracking of targets. The aircraft made its first flight on June 12, 1984, but was not shown to the public until 1986. Series production reportedly began in 1988, and the aircraft entered service in 1992.
