The Fairchild C-119 heavy transport aircraft powered by two radial engines was used by the U.S. Air Force as a basis for the «flying gunship» conversion. These particular conversions were built in limited numbers for use against Vietcong support roads and troop concentrations during the Vietnam War. The AC-119 K version, armed with 2 20mm cannons and 4 7.62mm machine guns, was very successful in night raids against trucks. Another version, the AC-119 G type, differed in its lighter armament. These aircraft had 2 additional jet engines to facilitate takeoff from natural runways when loaded with ammunition. With the entry into service of the more powerful AC-130H, these airplanes were progressively handed over to the South Vietnamese air force, which used them until the
