Avro 683 Lancaster (English Avro 683 Lancaster) is a British heavy four-engine bomber that was in service with the Royal Air Force. Together with its predecessor, the Halifax, it was the main heavy bomber of the Royal Air Force during World War II.
The first combat flight was made in March 1942. The Lancaster became the most famous and most effective night bomber of World War II, flying over 156 thousand combat missions and dropping over 600,000 tons of bombs. It also had other uses, including precision strikes during the day, and the delivery of the super-heavy Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs. It gained great popularity after the bombing of dams in the Ruhr Valley in 1943 during Operation Great Slap.
