The MiG-3 is an improved version of the MiG-1. Serial production of the MiG-3 began in December 1940. In April 1941, the newest fighter was handed over to the air corps of the front for the first time. Production of the MiG-3 series lasted only until the first decade of December 1941. The reason for the suspension of production was insufficient performance of the AM-35A engine. A total of about 3,120 MiG-3s were produced, while in the first half of 1942 only slightly more than 50 were produced
