The P-47 Thunderbolt is an American fighter-bomber of the Second World War, produced from 1941 to 1945, the largest single-engine fighter of those times. The P-47 was developed based on the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine. US Navy and US Marine Corps Grumman F6F Hellcat and Vought F4U Corsair fighters. The Thunderbolt was effective as a short- and medium-range escort fighter, in high-altitude air combat, and in ground attack in both the European and Pacific theaters. It was one of the main fighters of the US Air Force during the war, especially well performed the role of attack aircraft. Due to the radial engine and protected gas tanks, it was characterized by high survivability.
