The Douglas SBD Dauntless (English: Douglas SBD Dauntless) is a carrier-based dive bomber manufactured by the American airline Douglas Aircraft Company. It was in service with the US Navy and Air Force during World War II.
The SBD Dauntless was the main dive bomber of the US Navy from 1940 to the end of 1943, until it was replaced by the newer Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. It was also in service with the US Army Air Forces under the name A-24 Banshee.
Despite a number of significant shortcomings (low speed, outdated equipment at the beginning of hostilities), the SBD Dauntless was a very reliable combat aircraft and sank more Japanese ships than any other aircraft during World War II.
