The RF-4E is the tactical reconnaissance version of the famous McDonnell Douglas Phantom II two-seat multi-role fighter. It was developed specifically for export and was a combination of the RF-4C reconnaissance systems with the aerodynamic structure and upgraded engines of the F-4E. The Luftwaffe received the first examples in the early 1970s and became a major user along with Japan, Iran, Israel and Greece. Many components and reconnaissance systems were also produced in Germany. The RF-4E was capable of "all-weather" reconnaissance missions and could map terrain very efficiently and accurately thanks to its infrared sensors, target-finding systems, and survey equipment. Some countries have also created versions intended for specific operational use.
