The F-86 Saber single-engine jet fighter was developed by North American Aviation in the late 1940s and became a key aircraft in post-war military aviation. The F-86 had swept wings, a large forward air intake, and a General-Electric J47 jet engine. The fighter's performance was impressive for the time and was very different from wartime propeller-driven aircraft. The Saber was armed with six 12.7 mm Browning M3 machine guns mounted in the bow. It was widely used by the US Air Force. and played a key role during the Korean War, where it could effectively counter the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-15 fighter in the first jet air combat in history.
