The Boeing EA-18 G Growler was created to meet a specific need in the US Navy: a dedicated electronic warfare aircraft designed to replace the avionics and performance aging Grumman EA-6B Prowler. The Growler is a direct descendant of the F/A-18 F Super Hornet, a two-seat airborne fighter from which it largely retains all of its aerodynamic characteristics. Two General Electric engines give the Growler a top speed of Mach 1.8 and performance consistent with the aircraft it must support. The crew consists of a pilot and a WSO (Weapons System Officer). Unlike the F/A-18, it is not equipped with a cannon, but is capable of carrying radar jamming and electronic warfare pods, additional tanks, jammer and flare dispensers, and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles on underwing pylons.
