The P-38 was a radical change for American fighters. The first flight took place on January 27, 1939, serial aircraft began to arrive in October 1941, just before the war. The P-38, in one of its most notable exploits, intercepted and destroyed an aircraft carrying Japanese top admiral Yamamoto, killing him. The P-38L was a further development of the P-38J, which finally brought the P-38 to its full potential. The P-38L featured self-sealing fuel tanks and armored pilot protection. The aircraft was equipped with four .50 cal. machine guns plus a 20mm gun. It could carry 4,000 pounds of bombs or ten 5-inch rockets. When the US entered World War II, the P-38 was the fastest and heaviest fighter.
