The Lightning was the only British fighter designed and built capable of speeds above Mach 2 for service with the Royal Air Force. The Lightning will undoubtedly go down in history as another classic British fighter. The Lightning was specifically designed as a point defense interceptor - essentially a guided missile fighter with air superiority optimized to protect mainland Britain from bomber attacks. To reduce the cross-sectional area of the fuselage and improve performance, fuel capacity was severely limited. It was armed with two 30mm ADEN guns and two air-to-air missiles, first a de Havilland Firestreak and later a Hawker Siddeley Red Top.
