The F8F "Bearcat" was the fastest rotorcraft Grumman ever built, but it arrived too late to see combat in World War II. It was intended as a carrier-based fighter-interceptor. In modern parlance, it could be called "Hellcat Lite"; The F8F featured an all-metal, low-wing monoplane cantilever design, folding carrier wings, self-sealing fuel tanks, four .50 caliber machine guns, and a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine. The US Navy ordered two prototypes, the XF8F-1. in November 1943. After its first flight nine months later, the Bearcat prototype outperformed its heavier predecessor, including a thirty percent better rate of climb.
