The A-4 Skyhawk was developed by Douglas in response to the US Navy's requirement for a jet attack aircraft to replace the older A-1 Skyraider. Douglas chose a design that would minimize its size, weight and complexity. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the weight of the Navy. It had such a compact wing that it did not need to be folded for storage in the trunk.
The A-4E, including a new Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A engine with 8,400 lbf (37 kN) of thrust, a strengthened airframe with two additional weapons pylons (for a total of five), improved avionics, TACAN, Doppler navigation radar, radar altimeter, bombing computer and AJB-3A low-altitude bombing system.
