The MiG-29K was launched in 1984 as a multirole fighter development program, and in 1989-1991 the MiG-29K was tested aboard the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. The MiG-29K differed from the serial model of the MiG-29 with a new multifunctional radar "Beetle"; a cabin with a monochrome display and the use of the HOTAS (hands-on-throttle-and-stick) principle; air-to-air missiles with active homing RVV-AE; anti-ship and anti-radar missiles; as well as high-precision air-to-ground weapons. The development of the MiG-29K aircraft was preceded by deck landing tests on several prototypes using deck navigation equipment and an extinguisher hook. The MiG-29E made its first flight on July 23, 1988.
