The development of vehicles of this class began in Germany at the end of 1942. It was planned to design two versions of the “Waffentragers”: the first, on which it was planned to install a 75-mm L/70 gun, a 105-mm FH 18 howitzer or a 37-mm Flak 18 anti-aircraft gun, and a second, heavier one, for the 88-mm RaK 43 gun, 150 mm FH 43 howitzers or 128 mm K 43 guns.
On 19 April 1944, Krupp representatives visited the Ardeltwerke in Eberwald to discuss the 8.8 cm Pak 43 Kp auf Waffentraeger project. Ardelt shipped the second Pak 43 out of production. The Waffentraeger with this gun showed a significant improvement and was completely satisfactory during firing and sea trials.
