M109 is an American self-propelled howitzer, which is in service with the artillery of the US Army and some other countries of the world, including Ukraine.
Developed in the early 1960s, the self-propelled artillery system was intended to replace the unsuccessful M44 self-propelled gun, which was created on the basis of the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank, in parallel with the 105-mm M108 self-propelled gun. It was in serial production by the US defense industry, repeatedly modernized, from 1962 to 2003, and was also produced under license in the 1990s in South Korea.
