Great Western (English SS Great Western) is the first ship of the Great Western Steamship Company, built in 1838, and the first steamship specially built for transatlantic voyages. The ship, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, became a model for all future transatlantic wooden paddle steamers. "Great Western" worked on the New York route for eight years, until its owners went out of business. It was sold to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and was sent for scrap in 1856 after serving as a warship during the Crimean War.
