The Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt" is a US fighter-bomber developed in the early 1940s by Republic Aviation under the leadership of Georgian emigrant Alexander Kartveli. It was developed as a replacement for the Seversky P-35 aircraft. The P-47 Thunderbolt was the US Air Force's largest, heaviest, and most expensive piston-engine fighter. It was one of the most widespread aircraft of the Second World War, which was in service with the American Air Force, as well as the air forces of allied countries. It was delivered to the Soviet Union on a lend-lease basis. Received the nickname "Jug".
