In 1941, the Wehrmacht began fielding a self-propelled multiple launch rocket system equipped with 28/32 cm Nebelwerfer 41 rockets. One of the chassis options used for this system was the Sd.Kfz. 251/1 half-track armored personnel carrier. The most significant modification to the design of the standard Sd.Kfz. 251/1 was the installation of framework structures along the angled sides of the hull, designed to hold three rocket-launching frames on each side. Instead of the usual ten *Panzergrenadiers*, the vehicle's troop compartment accommodated a crew of 3–4 soldiers.
