The T-55 medium tank not only became the basis for later designs of the T-62, T-72 and T-80, which are still in use today, but also spurred Western rivals and contributed to the great arms race between East and West during the Cold War. Its 100 mm gun compared favorably with the 90 mm Western counterpart, and with cumulative shells it could penetrate up to 390 mm of armor. The T-55 was produced in the USSR, as well as under license in Czechoslovakia and Poland, and was supplied to Soviet countries and customers around the world - it even competed with the American M48 and M60A1 in the Middle East.
