Dimensions of the finished model: Length 283 mm; Width 106 mm.

The first prototype of the new main battle tank, now called the "Ariete" ("ram" in Italian), the same name as the army's most important armored unit, was completed in 1986. It was followed by others in 1988 to allow the Italian Army to begin a full test program. As a result, an initial order for 200 tanks was placed, followed by a second batch for another 200 improved versions. The end of the Cold War and financial difficulties led to the cancellation of the second batch, and production began at a slow pace at the Otobreda plant in La Spezia only in 1995.
