The Puma armored fighting vehicles are a family of light wheeled armored vehicles developed in 4x4 and 6x6 configuration by the Iveco Fiat-Oto Melara consortium based in Rome.
The Puma were designed for the Italian Army to complement the fleet of Centauro tank destroyers. Iveco Fiat received a contract from the Italian army to develop Puma platforms carrying missiles, a mortar, an ambulance and a command vehicle.
At the end of 1999, the Italian army ordered 580 Puma vehicles, 250 6x6 vehicles and 330 4x4 vehicles. The first cars were built in mid-2003. Puma first deployed to Southern Iraq in early 2005.
