A series of diesel-electric submarines built in the USSR in the 1950s. Chief designer - Z. A. Deribin. In total, in the period from 1957 to 1961, 20 boats were built at the Krasnoye Sormovo plant in the city of Gorky (sometimes two lead boats of the project are additionally included in the series). Also, project 633 documentation was used in the construction of boats in China and North Korea. More than 80 submarines were manufactured, some of which were exported to other countries. Currently, several submarines of this project are used in the Russian Navy as stationary training centers. Project 633 submarines are part of the naval forces of China, Algeria, Egypt, and North Korea.
