In 1941, the Fairchild Aircraft Company began developing a cargo and landing transport aircraft. The first flight of the prototype took place on September 10, 1944. By 1955, about 1,100 copies had been built. The aircraft was adopted by the US Air Force, Italy, India, Belgium, Taiwan and many other countries. The C-119 Flying Boxcar was gradually replaced by the C-130 Hercules.
