The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" is the first American all-metal heavy four-engine bomber.
The aircraft was designed in 1934 as part of a competition to create a coastal bomber operating against ships. A year later, the Boeing 299 prototype was created, equipped with Pratt & Whitney 750 hp engines, the first flight of which took place on July 28 of the same year. Subsequent aircraft had Wright Cyclone 1200 hp engines.
Boeing factories developed and produced the B-17 Flying Fortress for the US Army exactly 12 months later. Boeing factories, together with Douglas and Lockheed, produced a total of 6,981 B-17 bombers of various models, as well as 5,745 other modifications, that is
