M48 "General Patton" is a US medium tank of the first generation of the 1950s. It was designed in 1950-1951 as a new generation tank, intended to replace all medium tanks of previous models in the US armed forces. The M48 was based on the experimental M103 heavy tank and used a number of design innovations, primarily a fully cast armored hull and an ellipsoidal turret. Serial production of the tank began in 1952 and continued until 1959, when it was replaced on the assembly line by the M60 based on it; during this period, 11,703 M48 tanks were produced in several variants. Since the mid-1960s, most M48s produced have been upgraded to a level close to the base M60.
