Vickers Defence Systems began development of the Challenger 1 successor as a private enterprise in 1986. The Ministry of Defence ordered a prototype in December 1988. In June 1991, the Ministry of Defence placed an order for 140 vehicles, and another 268 were ordered in 1994. Production began in 1993, and the first tanks were delivered in July 1994, replacing the Challenger 1. After production delays, the tank entered servi
