In the late 1970s, the US armed forces began to feel the need to replace the disparate and outdated fleet of military vehicles. The army sought to obtain a unified and highly effective platform capable not only of transporting personnel, but also of carrying a variety of weapons. Three companies competed in the final stage of the competition: AM General, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental. The winner was AM General, and the first production car rolled off the assembly line on January 2, 1985.
