The heavy helicopter Sikorsky CH-54 was created as part of the task of supplying European NATO bases with fuel, ammunition and equipment. The development and production were carried out by the Sikorsky Aircraft company, founded by the outstanding aircraft designer of Ukrainian origin Igor Sikorsky. The first flight of the prototype, which was initially designated S-64, took place on May 9, 1962. The serial machines that later entered service with the US Army were designated CH-54A. Most of these helicopters were sent to Vietnam, where they were used by specialized aviation units to transport artillery, ammunition, army vehicles, and various cargoes.
